Technologic: Write it, Cut it, Paste it, Save it, Print it, Scan it, Send it, Fax – Rename it
Posted by Carlos Gooden : November 5th, 2009In his Second Annual Address to The University of Toledo, President Jacobs shared his vision on our use of technology as an institution when he said, “Our capability in computer-assisted learning and distance learning will be greatly enhanced…The concept of extreme student centeredness suggests we meet students where they are-increasingly they are to be found in cyberspace.”
This particular quote was with me all morning as I gave an hour long presentation to 20 Northern Ohio high schools at the same time. Thanks to Brian Szabo and Ted Ronau in the Center for Creative Instruction at the Health Science Campus and the Northern Ohio Research and Training Technology Hub for coordinating the video conferencing for The Virtual College Fair. The University of Toledo joined The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, The University of Akron and Bowling Green State University in what will soon become the future of recruiting for admissions offices.
I used the first half of the video conference to present a dynamic and energetic presentation that I developed specifically for this program. This presentation allowed me to alternate the audio/visual of me public speaking with the images and text of the PowerPoint. I think this helped the students stay in tune with the information, even though I was hundreds of miles away. The University of Toledo was well represented. During the second half of the virtual college fair, the moderator, in Lorain County, hosted a “Round Robin Question and Answer Session” with EACH of the high schools. Not only was I able to see the students in their classrooms, auditoriums and libraries as they inquired about UT, but the other 19 schools were able to tune in as well. It was truly a unique experience. The questions ranged everywhere from our Co-op programs, to minimum requirements, and even Greek Life (just to name a few).
I can’t wait to do it again. I already have a few tricks up my sleeve on how to truly engage the students for next year. A final thanks to Chris Henderson and Billy Pierce in The Office of Undergraduate Admission for allowing me to participate in this project.
P.S. It’s NOT true what they say, the camera didn’t add 10 pounds to me! I am going to hit the weight room up later this afternoon though! Haha
Until next time,
Carlos G.

Carlos Gooden is a recent graduate from The University of Toledo and absolutely loved it. Originally from Finneytown High School in Cincinnati, majored in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. While at UT, he was VERY involved on campus in things such as The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Student Government, Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Dance Marathon (among many others). You may have also caught him walking backwards giving tours of our beautiful campus throughout the year. His senior year he was honored to be selected as the 2007 Homecoming King and 2008 Greek Man of the Year. Having just graduated this past semester, he is now working as an Admission Coordinator for UT to help future rockets through the application and decision making process. With that said, if you have any questions let us know! I hope you enjoy the blog and GOOOOO ROCKETS!

What an exciting (and practical) way to reach out to high school students! And the talents of the folks in CCI can not be underestimated! Glad you had the chance to do this!
