Think Positive.
As our University of Toledo leadership continues to meet and discuss a new revised budget I find it interesting to see what our neighbors north are doing. Virtually all state-supported universities in Michigan are increasing their tuition beginning this coming semester. As you well know, Michigan is suffering many of the economic challenges we are experiencing here in Ohio including reduction of state-supported scholarships.
Here is a sample of just a few of the University tuition increases
Central Michigan University 4.6%
Michigan State University 6.5%
Oakland University 9%
University of Michigan 5.6% and Wayne State University 5.4%.
Indeed these are challenging times but I continue to be optimistic and focus on the many positive elements occurring at our University. Our direct from high school enrollment appears to be headed for another record number. Our transfer numbers should be up from last year as well. People are choosing our University over other options and to me that says we continue to be headed in the right direction. Enjoy the week, regards, Larry.

I think it’s fair to say the reason enrollment from high school is up is because of the UT Guarantee program. Has the university released any data to the public that suggests this program is something the university can afford? I read in the IC a while back that the program supposedly will pay for itself, but where is the proof of that (or data that suggests that)? If there is data regarding that type of thing, I’d love to see it. Thanks.

Trey, Thank you for taking the time to read my Journal and to respond. The University of Toledo is preparing to welcome over 380 Blue and Gold Scholars (formally the Guarantee) in a few weeks. I believe this program will have a life-changing impact on these students. I also believe that this program will be net revenue positive due to three major factors. First, the federally sponsored Pell Grant Program has been increased to a maximum of $5350. Second, the Ohio College Opportunity Grants Program will provide qualifying students with a $1000 scholarship. The third factor is that the 21 communities chosen for this program have a financial aid histroy that indicates that the majority of students will qualify for the highest level awards. Once the semester starts and the official data is obtained I will be pleased to review this information with you and others. Again, I thank you for your interest and support. Regards, Larry
