Michael,

My intent for this blog post was to politely discuss something in a humble way. My hope is that by discussing this topic in a broad sense that it gets some discussion going among people at the university. Your reply makes a number of assumptions -- that this occurred at UT, that it was people who work at UT talking, that it was two people. I can think of multiple instances where I've witnessed an occurrence like this, so I'm not at all trying to gossip or call anybody out on behavior. I'm trying to raise awareness in myself (if I write it, I'm much more conscious of my own behavior) and maybe others will think about it, too.

Your previous post talked about open communication. I agree that honest communication is often avoided. Your point is well taken.

Additionally, you are a vice president at the university. You disagreed with this behavior, yet you permitted it to continue. Every time you let something slide; you create a new standard...and it's usually a lower standard. Rather than confront them and explain that their behavior was not acceptable for two professionals in YOUR university, you chose to talk about them behind their backs by writing about it in a blog.

I hope you are satisfied with the new standard you have created.

One of the major contributors to adults gossiping about one another is we have been programmed as a society to be hyper-sensitive to criticism. The University of Toledo even teaches this behavior to undergraduates. If you live in the dormitory and tell your roommate, "You smell, it's time to shower." You are wrong and will have to sit down with the hall director for a lengthy speech. If you simply bad mouth him behind his back there was no confrontation (in the most lukewarm definition of the word).

The university could eliminate this petty vindictive behavior if it enforced an environment of open communication. Instead UT (and most government institutions) is more concerned with how to make people feel better about themselves, rather than making them better.

Many years ago, I was told by a great minister that if what you are talking about is not necessary, kind, and true-you should keep your mouth closed. In other words, if our conversation lacks any of those ingredients-we should keep our trap shut!!

Good points. I suppose I could be over sensitive. And, yes, it's a lot easier to comment on others' actions than it is to make sure we live up to our own expectations. I learned that after I blogged about being on time for meetings!

Are you certain it was gossiping? Maybe you are over-sensitive and misread the situation. To be fair...keep that in mind, as well, and follow what you preach.
