Instead of funding gimmicky scholarships, why don't we simply lower tuition for all? UT tuition is reasonable, but combined with fees it can be a steep burden on many folks who don't fall into one of these special group. Lower tuition for all would benefit more people.

I totally agree with you. The Blue and Gold scholars program is great for students from communities in need. UT is doing an amazing thing and I have no idea why the collegian is so upset about it. But I am concerned about what Larry Burns is talking about with the Boy Scout program. In such a diverse community why is UT linking up with such a homophobic and discriminatory group? Do we really need to increase anti-gay rhetoric on campus? Who is going to head up this union - Crystal Dixon?? (I hear she's still looking for work!)

I don't often read the blogs on the UT website and therefore missed Vice President Scarborough's post. This post by Mr. Strunk called my attention to it, and I admit I was drawn in by the word "flak". After reading the comments posted after Scarborough's blog entry, however, I was disturbed by the fact that they were referred to as "flak". Scarborough tossed out an idea and people responded. It isn't as if he was shouted down at a town meeting by a bunch of irate faculty and students. I found the comments to be well written, carefully thought out and civil (a welcome change from blog responses on most websites). It is a disservice to term them "flak".

And by the way, traditional institutions of higher education do not seem to be having the same problem as newspapers. We have a steady or increasing number of people willing to pay for our services, even when they have to bear the costs traditionally borne by state government. In addition UT already does distance learning, and up to this point we have done it about as well as anyone. I'm not sure we have much to learn from Kaplan or Phoenix except perhaps for how to better market ourselves.

I am delighted to have someone as well-trained and articulate as Lee Strang here at UT. He is a tremendous addition to our university.

I was reading Jerri's story when I heard that she had died. The pain she shared over the loss of her children and her health and dreams brought me to tears. My deepest condolences for her wonderful family and new husband come to you with love and tears in the loss of your beautiful daughter, sister and wife. I hope she got the chance to go sailing with you, Scott.

I had the honor of hanging out with Dr. Nielsen almost a decade ago when she did a presentation for (then) MCO alumni. She went to Doc Watson's with a few staff members. She was unpretentious, fun and easy to talk to.

I was fairly new to the institution at the time, young and a little intimidated when in the presence of physicians. Dr. Nielsen helped me remember that we’re all just people. I will never forget that night!

I can give a testimonial that the media training offered by the communications office is extremely helpful. I also love the idea of answering what you wish a reporter had asked. If they want something else, they’re sure to ask you another question!
