Don’t blink, don’t even blink. Blink and you’re gone. Blink and you’re facing your last year at college, or your last day at a job, or your last meeting for that event you’ve been planning for weeks. So don’t blink, because you’ll feel like you’ve been thrown into another point in your timeline without knowing it. Just, don’t blink.
Today marks the halfway point of the semester. I know, right? I’m not kidding. We’re halfway done with our Fall 2012 semester! It feels like it’s still syllabus week to me, though the amount of exams and papers keep trying to convince me otherwise. This morning feels like seconds away, while 5PM seems to be months off. Four years ago, I was a Junior in high school. Four years from now, I’ll be in the next chapter or book of my life.
With every blink, a lifetime passes. One second you’re wondering when this boring lecture will end, and the next second, it’s two Tuesdays later the next year. It’s scary, yet beautiful, and I still can’t believe that it’s October and that the Winter break is quickly approaching. Just take a second and think about how fast everything is passing by. Most of us are in our late teens and 20s- on average, we’ve already finished about a fourth of our lives, just like we’ve finished a fourth of this academic year.
So after freaking out a bit, take a moment to think about the importance of this halfway point of the semester. This is the perfect time to both reflect and plan because you’ve got something to look back on, and something to anticipate. So think back to all that you’ve accomplished so far: the exam grade you’re most proud of, the organization that you dedicated your time to, the research you’ve finished, the friends you’ve made, or that one Tweet that got a bunch of replies. Also look back on what you can improve upon, because you still have 8 weeks to change it!
And don’t forget- UT has so much to offer, if you take the advantage of the opportunities you have! Don’t let these years become wasted memories. Make the most of it, enjoy your short time here, and most importantly, don’t blink!
