What’s Wrong With My EMAIL!!!??!!
I have heard this from so many people this week.
First, take a deep breath. Your email is still there – its just new and better!
Next, follow these instructions to retrieve your emails:
1. Go to https://myutaccount.utoledo.edu/? and change your password. I know your password probably isn’t expired but change it anyways. This will make your new email box up-to-date.
2. Go to Rockets.utoledo.edu and sign in with the NEW password and your UT identifier (the one you use to sign in to email/MyUT)

3. Don’t stress, they are still working on this so there may be some kinks in the system.
4. Get excited because now you have WAY more space in your mail box and even more space to save documents and such.
Any other questions or technical concerns, the IT help desk’s number is 419.530.2400. They are very helpful.
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions or need help!!!

Why a new e-mail address? It’s so long now (first.last@rockets.utoledo.edu). So hard to tell someone that…
I’m using my engineering e-mail from now on….
August 14th, 2009at 12:17 pm
Yo, ITA with you. The new name is wayyyy too long! I’m glad I’m a returning student because we can still use our old addresses (xxxx@utoledo.edu). It will redirect your email to your new address.
As was mentioned in the IC, the decision to add “rocket” to everyone’s email was an executive decision. A REALLY bad executive decision, if I may say. This is suppose to build “spirit” and “pride.” Are you kidding me???!!! An email address is a functionality tool. That is all. Shorter is better. People misspell or mistype them way too often as it is.
August 14th, 2009at 12:53 pm
I agree with the previous comments. An email address is supposed to be as short as possible, yet still identify the user and institution, i.e., joestudent@utoledo.edu. Look at other local institutions: @bgsu.edu, @owens.edu, @lourdes.edu, and @monroeccc.edu. Why, oh why, must UT executives make such boneheaded decisions? Spirit and pride? No. Confusion and irritation? Yes!

This is ridiculous. Even when I did reset my password and went to the mainpage, it says that an error occured. Then when I did get through, it wouldn’t let me submit my information. It kept telling me to “provide a birth year”. I was like, “where’s that tab at?” Well after I tried it 4 times, that tab finally decided to show up. So when I filled everything out and submitted it, it told me that an error had occured and could not process. How many more times do I have to try this before the birth year will appear again? This is awful. I’d prefer to stick with the small mailbox that works than the larger mailbox that won’t open.

It’s pretty embarassing. The whole “rocket” thing sounds very unprofessional. I would hate to have in on my resume at a job interview. I’m gonna get a gmail account that hopefully i can use for official communications. To be fair though, this is just the ‘rah rah’ administration website. student government and every other club is just a resume builder, they aren’t really involved in policies like this

I also agree this email address is unwieldy. As a graduate student I use my university email as my professional address for publication, conference registration, and correspondences with colleges. While I am glad we are finally getting more email storage, I long ago had to start archiving my email by ‘popping’ it with a gmail account. I am dismayed that they plan to phase out my alias of first.last@utoledo.edu as I have been using that since the university took over management of our departmental mail. I am concerned that they can simply decide to invalidate my email “identity”, do they have plans to do away with my departmental email alias as well, which I have been using for professional correspondences for years? Well if this is what we are stuck with I hope they don’t again change email addresses/aliases again in another 2-3 years.
In years past you had the ability to manually set an email forward, and you had control of setting this up, modifying it and if you chose go back to using university mail. This setting is as far as I have been able to find is no longer in existence. An email to IT informed me, after two days, that I could email them with the address I wanted them to forward my email to. This is not the same thing as having the ability to control where your mail is going if there is a sudden change in your email situation.

The new e-mail format will cause me to simply abandon using this address. It’s unprofessional and too lengthy. I attend a university, I’m not part of a sports team. I don’t want to give employers this jokey, unprofessional e-mail address.
Awful job, UT.
August 14th, 2009at 3:54 pm
I don’t like the new email addresses. They are too long. Also, the fact that only the inbox transfers and not any of the subfolders is horrible. I put all my important emails in the subfolders.
August 14th, 2009at 4:23 pm
this is stupid and it’s making things extremely difficult for me
August 14th, 2009at 4:51 pm
Hey another plus,
You can set up Outlook 2003/2007 to the e-mail server and avoid most of the new adjustments. It helps and actually is more useful to use!
August 14th, 2009at 8:47 pm
Krystal, the title alone cracked me up the second I saw it. I’m glad you published this; so many of my friends have had trouble setting up the new e-mail!
August 14th, 2009at 9:57 pm
I’m a little baffled by this new system… my email address is not firstname.lastname@rockets.utoledo.edu. Instead, it is my userID in place of the firstname.lastname. Is that supposed to happen?
August 15th, 2009at 10:58 am
Thank you so much for posting this Krystal!! I followed your directions exactly and got my e-mail working!! You are such a life saver
August 15th, 2009at 11:58 am
I’m noticing that email sent to my old address (xxxx@utoledo.edu) takes around one day extra to reach my new mailbox (xxxx@rockets.utoledo.edu). I hope this is fixed soon.
Also, if you have a Hotmail (or other Outlook Live) account, then you need to log out of one to log into the other (when using web mail). Needless to say, that could get tedious pretty quickly.
Finally, I’d like to add my vote that adding “rockets” to the email address was a dumb move. I get the impression that they couldn’t figure out how to keep our old domain, and so made up a new one.
August 15th, 2009at 2:39 pm
I must say, this whole process has been absolutely ridiculous. First off, I was using the utnet.utoledo.edu address as my main email address, as I was told to when I first became a student here. That’s what I used for Facebook, which now I cannot get into becuase to change my email there, they have to send an email to the old account, which now doesnt work. Second, I use a SmartPhone to get all my email. I cannot set this up to get my email anymore, and the helpdesk sent me a one word response, which provided no help at all. Third, I use a Hotmail email account as my personal email account. Apparantly this new UT email uses the same system. I usually use my computer to check my UT email, then my Hotmail. Well, when I try to login to hotmail, it says I am already logged in with my UT account, and I cannot even get to my personal email now!
Lastly, this new email is FRICKEN TOO LONG!!! I have never seen a college use a longer email address then us. Take BG: firstnamelastname@bgsu.edu. SIMPLE! No periods! No Rockets! Who cares about adding rockets to the email….It just makes it too long. Before I could just tell someone to email to my name at utoledo.edu. Now I have to say at rockets.utoledo.edu, which is UNNECESARY!!! PLEASE CHANGE THE EMAIL ADDRESSES BACK!!
August 15th, 2009at 9:10 pm
This new email is terrible. It’s running horribly slow on my computer…not to mention the address itself is way too long. The old platform was simple, easy to use, and worked quickly…why change?
August 15th, 2009at 9:50 pm
At first I wasn’t bothered by the change since I don’t use my UT email that often, since it was more trouble than it was worth when I became a student back in 2005. Once those kinks were worked out I thought I would start using it a bit more often. Instead of my personal email getting clogged with spam, I would use the filter offered by UT.
Now with this crazy change I not only have to log into the UT site, but then again to get my email which is totally stupid. Go back to the old address and let us log in once for everything. Some of us are on limited time constraints and every keystroke takes time! Use some common sense, if it aint broke, don’t fix it!!
I’m going back to using my personal email address and sorting through the spam.
August 16th, 2009at 11:10 am
I sure hope they are working on figuring out how to set this email system up with my Palm Pre. The old system just sync’d right up with it. Can’t get it at all right now. I hope they are working on that issue or they are going to see a lot of people not using this too long email address.
August 16th, 2009at 5:48 pm
I dont know if it posted but just wanted to say thanks fo the help with setting up the new rocket email.
August 16th, 2009at 9:03 pm
Even if the new email address may be longer than the last one, what does it matter? I find it hard to believe that people are not going to use this email just because the name is longer, that’s ridiculous! The old email could barely hold any data and I constantly got blocked out because it was full. I hated it! With this new email, we get more storage for our emails, and even more storage for documents. Well it may have caused a few problems and is not fully up and running just yet, I think the pros most definitely outweigh the cons and it will be better for us.
August 17th, 2009at 12:37 am
This sucks!
August 17th, 2009at 8:50 am
I appreciate the intent of the new email system- it will definitely be nice to have a large amount of storage space. However, the devil does appear to be in the details! Adding the “rockets” part to the email does make the address sound a bit unprofessional. And so far, my old emails haven’t been switched to my new account, even though (according to the announcement we all got) they’re supposed to be there.
I do like a lot of the features of the new email – I’m a big fan of being able to set my calendar to send my cell text message reminders about assignments and meetings. So I’ll just hope for the best concerning some of the kinks. I REALLY wish the powers that be had decided against adding “rockets” to the addresses, though – it just looks so”yay team!”.

I keep getting a “web browsing” error when trying to read and delete emails. I am not able to delete at all. Any suggestions on how to deal with this? Do I also need to update my blackberry as well. If so, this change is really an unncessary waste of time and aggravation that I don’t need right before classes start!

Hey fellow students! Listen up! This is the first time UT is focusing on students demand. I like this new email system. What is the matter with those complaining. I have friends at BGSU and OSU that do not have this great email. For once thank UT for doing their best to put students first. Thank you UT.
August 17th, 2009at 5:22 pm
sigh. the old system was much better. windows live FTL
August 17th, 2009at 7:27 pm
For those who say that Owens and other insitutions have shorter email adresses your wrong. I was a former Owens student and my email was: firstname_lastname@student.owens.edu not much different in length. Also read the FAQ, it states that: faculty/ staff will retain the @utoledo.edu domain while all students will add the @rockets.utoledo.edu . This was done to differentiate between students and faculty. So yes, if you work for the university and are a student also you will have two email accounts. Everyone need to quit their complaining and be greatful for the upgraded email system. Plain and simple, we are in a College setting, not a high school.

I would much rather permanently delete a few month old items to get rid of the “over-the-size-limit” message than deal with this nonsense. That was real tough before, clicking an X a few times….it almost took 30 seconds…
