Mayoral Debate at UT This Thursday!!!
This Thursday, September 17th we will be celebrating the birthday of our Constitution in the form of a debate between the top two Mayoral Candidates for the City of Toledo. I can’t tell you who will be debating yet as the results are yet to be determined, but I can tell you that it’s going to be a heated race. The debate will be this Thursday at 2:00 pm on the steps of the Student Union (facing Centennial Mall).
The theme of the debate will be centered on topics that are relevant to students and young people in general and, of course – The Constitution!!
Candidates will be given two minutes for opening statements, one minute answers for each question, thirty second rebuttals, and a two minute closing statement.
We will have free birthday cake and pocket Constitutions to hand out as well!
Please help us by sending in your questions for the candidates to krystalyn.weaver@rockets.utoledo.edu! We will also be accepting questions from the audience at the debate on Thursday. Look for a table with note cards and write them down for us.
Let’s show the candidates just how important the students at The University of Toledo are to the City of Toledo and have a big crowd for the debate.
Any questions – get in touch with me. See you there!!!

Why are you hosting a debate two days after the primary? do u really think that the candidates are going to want a debate right now? They just did so many debates leading up to the primaries.Did u know that there was a debate hosted on campus by the college republicans and the college democrats 2 weeks ago? It discussed the exact same things you propose to discuss on thursday. We already showed them how great the student are at UT, the debate on the 3rd had the highest turnout of any debate this season. I just don’t understand what will be accomplished by this debate, it seems that it is going to be a waste of the candidates and the students time. I hope that something changes so that we don’t dishonor our constitution with a pointless debate.

Emily,
We have to have it on this date because it is Constitution Day. We began planning this event over the summer. We will be taking questions from the audience and our questions will also be geared towards the Constitution – in celebration of the 222nd anniversary of the signing of the Constitution.
Hope to see you there!

Contrary to Emily, I believe that this is a great idea! 1) you are discussing the constitution, which is not what was discussed the other day. 2) These are the men who are actually going to be fighting for the Mayor’s office seat, not a cohort of people standing around and discussing the same things and “politicking.” I think it also is an informal affair being outside, allowing students to come and go while ON campus, not during after hours in Doerman.
I would encourage the SGA to have voter registration information too. UT students need to have a voice in Toledo – we all live here too.
Great idea guys, I hope you have a good turnout.
