And we’re off…
Posted by Esther Fabian : January 29th, 2009Wow. I’ve been afforded the wonderful opportunity to write about UTMC through this journal, blog, whatever you want to call it.
As do most folks who take up a project like this, I feel compelled to start this journal by explaining why it’s been created and the kinds of things I hope to share with you.
This journal has been created in order to provide a way to communicate with the community at large, as well as with UT faculty, staff and students, about trends in health care and about the people of UT Medical Center.
We chose the name “Pulse of UTMC” because I’m hoping to help you get to know the people who are delivering care here. Whether it’s about Dr. Christopher Cooper’s CORAL study, a $25 million (that’s right – million) national research study funded by the NIH, or it’s about the phone message I just got from the mother of a patient who was not only wowed by watching the medical team respond to a code but also by how clean and efficient the George Isaac Minimally Invasive Surgery Center is (we call it “The George” for short), or it’s how float nurse Connie Donald’s passion for life benefits her patients and the dogs she walks four days a week at a local animal shelter.
It all makes UTMC what it is. It’s the “pulse” of this place and it all helps to define university-quality care.
And I can’t wait to share with you and to have you respond to posts. If we’re lucky, we’ll have some guest writers join in, too.
Hope to see you back here soon!

Esther Fabian is the director of health care marketing at The University of Toledo. Although she is a graduate of Bowling Green State University, Esther has willingly traded in brown and orange for the blue and gold. Over her nine years of employment at the institution, she continues to be fascinated by the incredible things that UT Medical Center professionals do every day to help people and loves learning about the many aspects of health care through those exceptional people. Esther hopes to use this journal to give folks a peek into the world of UT Medical Center, and maybe an occasional glimpse into the world of a working mom and owner of many, many pets.

Tell us about Rebel.

For those of you who are interested, Rebel is one of my three dogs at home. He’s been quite a challenge for my husband, Mike, and me over the years (Rebel is almost 8). If I broach the subject of stress (or unconditional love of a pet), his name may come up again!
