Pulse of UTMC
Archive for June, 2012
Massage therapy has been available to the UT students, staff and employees since April, 2011. I was the fortunate one hired to provide this service. (We did have another therapist, but he has moved on to other ventures.)
With this first blog, I will just tell you a little something about me.
I was certified as a massage therapist in 1979 while working in a local health food store. I learned this skill from a wonderful and talented woman, Irene Gauthier, in Southfield, MI. I tried to make a go of it as a massage therapist for about a year, but Toledo wasn’t quite ready for therapeutic massage. I eventually hung up my Shakti sandals and got a job in the real world. I did remain active in massage, however, while working full time and raising my family.
In 2007 my mother’s health started to decline. She had always been very fit and active, and her multiple hospital stays were quite distressing to her. I would come in with oils and lotions and massage any part of her body I could reach. The effects on her physical and mental well being were profound. I suddenly knew this is what I was put on this earth to do. I enrolled in massage school the next day, and obtained my license in 2009. Since then I have been pursuing certification as an oncology massage therapist through the Perigrine Institute in Santa Fe, NM. I will achieve this goal in March, 2013. I have been studying aromatherapy through The Institue of Spiritual Healing and Aromatherapy out of Arvada, CO, who offers national certification in aromatherapy, and I plan to achieve that goal in early 2013 as well. I have achieved master Reiki status, and have had extensive education in reflexology. I currently volunteer at The Victory Center as a massage therpist for cancer patients, and provide bodywork to healthy people, cancer patients and other medically frail people in my private practice.
In the meantime, UT Physicians advertised in the Blade for a massage therapist. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I ran to the computer and submitted my resume immediately. What good fortune that they hired me. I have a true passion for helping people feel better, and now do this for my living. Life is good! The high heels are in the back of my closet, and thankfully, I am wearing comfortable shoes again!
I can provide deep tissue or gentle massage. After reviewing your intake form, acupressure, reflexology, warm stones and intuition are used to help you achieve your bodywork goals.
Make an appointment today! You won’t regret it, and your body will thank you for it.
Our Spring special continues through June 20th- Buy one session at full price, ($50 for an hour, $25 for a half hour),
and the second session you book is half price. There is no time limit on when the second session takes place, and you pay for the sessions when received. Such a bargain!
