UTMC: Your Door to Balloon StopJanuary 24th, 2013
Having chest pains, difficulty breathing, or sweating? These are just some of the symptoms of what may be a heart attack, but have no fear if you are close to UTMC, you will be in good hands. Each year over a million people in the U.S. have a heart attack. About half of them will die. Every precious second counts. As of October 2012, UTMC ‘s current door to balloon time is 50 minutes, that’s 40 minutes less than the national goal. In medicine, those 40 minutes are the difference between life and death. UTMC understands that. Just recently, I spoke with a patient who came into the ER with a massive heart attack, they were taken back to the Cath Lab and a balloon was inserted….all within 27 minutes! The patient is doing well and returned back to work within 30 days. If you missed Dr. Burket’s explanation of Door to Ballon time during the football trivia, take a minute to watch the video (really the video is only 1:04 minutes). Regarding knowledge, it was once said, “It is nothing for one to know something unless another knows you know it.” Persian Proverb
