Rocky's Fuel For Thought

Do the HARLEM SHAKE!

ATTENTION ALL UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO STUDENTS!!!

There is an internet craze going on and I want you all to be a part of it. Maybe you have heard of it? The Harlem Shake!

Come join me on Thursday, February 21st at 12:00 pm (noon) on the steps of the Student Union in Centennial Mall.

If you are not familiar with the Harlem Shake, just go out to YouTube and search, there are lots of examples and ideas.

I want to see all of the student body turn out for this! Everyone is invited! Athletes, Greeks, International Students, Cheerleaders, Dance Team, The Band, Blue Crew, True Blue, even the faculty and staff. Come on out! Yes, it will be a little chilly but that’s ok we are used to it here in Ohio. Just think warm Spring Break thoughts!

So bring your crazy costumes or masks. Your pool inflatables. Your Greek letters. Those bigs heads at the basketball games (I love those!). If you can’t think of anything, wear your favorite UT colors.

Since this is an internet craze, we will be using social media to promote and to show off our great work. We want to see lots of photos of everyone having fun so bring your cameras!

Spread the word and LIKE our Facebook pages. fb.com/utmascot and fb.com/utoledo

Also if you are on twitter, follow me! @RockytheRocket and @UToledo use the hashtag #UToledoHarlemShake

Don’t forget, Thursday, February 21st at 12:00 pm (noon) on the steps of the Student Union in Centennial Mall. Look for me and follow the sounds from WXUT!

Remember this is YOUR university. Lets show the internet how much school spirit The University of Toledo has!

Your Pal,

We won!

Hey Rocket Fans,

Rocky here, and I wanted to give you all an update on the Capital One Mascot Challenge Write-In Vote contest that I have been participating in the past 15 weeks. With your help and your votes I have come a long way and have some good news to share!

“… Congratulations are in order to Rocky who has earned a spot on this year’s 2013 Capital One All-America Mascot Team!

Throughout the 2012 Capital One Mascot Challenge, your fans had the chance to participate in a “write-in” vote at www.capitalonebowl.com to determine which mascot would receive an automatic place on the 2013 Capital One Mascot Challenge team roster.

Your campaigning worked and this fall, Rocky will have the chance to compete for $20,000 toward his collegiate mascot program, provided by Capital One, and ultimate mascot bragging rights if named winner of the competition.
Be sure to share the good news with your readers and get them excited about the upcoming competition!
…”

This is an email I just received today and I wanted to share it with all of you! So it is with utmost appreciation I say, “Thank you Rocket Fans” for everything!

Also if you haven’t had a chance be sure to check out a video Rocksy and I made here:

Thanks,

Need your help Rocket Fans!

Dear Rocket Fans,

I am calling on you for your continued support and for your help with a contest I currently am in. The contest is called “Write-In Vote” and is brought to you by the Capital One Mascot Challenge. My friend, Larry Burns, interviewed me on his show “Tower Views” to fill everyone in on what’s happening with your favorite mascot me, Rocky, and the Capital One Write-In Vote contest. Check it out below:

As of right now I currently stand in first place, beating some of my friends like Aubie and Brutus! But to continue to stay on top I need your help.

This was released Nov. 27, and is the most current standings for the Write-In Vote!

This is week six of the contest and thanks to your support we have been number 1 in this contest since the end of week one. But there is still plenty of time left in the contest so anything can happen. In fact the deadline is just a couple of weeks from now on Dec. 17th! Here is a recap of the contest and how to vote:

What does the Write-In vote mean? If you were following me this past year, I sadly did not make this year’s team. However, the winner of the Write-In vote earns an automatic place on the 2013 Capital One All-American Mascot team! To win I need your votes! Here is how you can help:

  • Select Ohio, and then The University of Toledo
  • Submit
  • Tell your friends
  • And continue to vote and spread the word

You can vote for me an unlimited number of times from now until the deadline on December 17, 2012 (11:59 a.m. ET). Again, I cannot do this alone, I need your help and support. My fellow Rockets, I am calling you out on your Rocket Pride, lets see what you’ve got! Securing my place as King gets The University of Toledo national media coverage throughout the college football season. And if I am a participant five times, I get inducted into the Capital One Mascot Challenge Hall of Fame! As a bonus for your support I have another video I would like to share with you all, it’s another interview with me on UT:10News!

SEE YOU AT THE GAME and GO ROCKETS!

Vote for Rocky!

My fellow Rockets,

I am writing this to officially announce my candidacy for the…. Capital One National Mascot of the Year! I think I have all the qualities to be King of the Mascots! You can get a small taste of all I do  in the video below:

If you may not know The University of Toledo and I are currently ranked second in the Write-In Contest as shown here:

First Tailgate of the Season

Over the weekend Rocksy and I went to the Browning Masonic Community out in Waterville, Ohio.  The event, called Miracle Miles for Memory Care at the first annual Road Rally and College Tailgate Party, was held to support the fight against Alzheimer’s. The Tailgate began bright and early on Saturday morning. We were first greeted by an alumni of this great university, who was also a UT cheerleader from 1969-1973. She told me how much I have changed since she was in school; and she was absolutely ecstatic to meet Rocksy for the first time. I even got their picture to share the memory forever:

Freddie and Frieda were there to join in the tailgating fun and to support the fight against Alzheimer’s too. Even though our rivals were at the tailgate I didn’t let their presence affect my fun in the sun. In fact, Rocksy and I even caught them sporting our colors! (We don’t think they noticed that we noticed and we even got some evidence to keep in our scrapbook!)

My friends in the Rocket Marching Band also came to support the cause and join in the fun. When Rocksy and I found them they were hanging out with some clowns. We had fun dancing and cheering with them as they played music for the crowd. The Rockette’s, Toledo’s dance team, were there as well.

Along with the tailgate was a Road Rally. There were all kinds of classic cars, motorcycles, sports cars, slow cars, fast cars, and even blue cars!  All of these cars were traveling across Ohio and raising money to support the fight against Alzheimer’s. One of the rider’s even let Rocksy and I ride his Harley, it was so exciting, and not to mention the coolest color ever!

My fellow Rockets, you would be proud to know I tailgated until I literally dropped! GO ROCKETS!

SEE YOU AT THE GAME,

Is it hot in there?

Good Afternoon Fellow Rockets!

Everyone always asks the same thing to Rocksy and I. Whether it’s “Are you hot in there?” or “They are the only warm ones here.” or “I bet you’re warm in there!”

I wanted to answer that question with a little fact to go along with it!

To answer your question, YES! It is VERY, VERY hot! I went to a mascot boot camp that was held by the original Phillie Phanatic! There was a section where he taught us all about safety and how to stay cool. He also gave us this staggering fact, that in costume it is 40-50 degrees hotter than the outside world. So say we were running around on one of those 115 degree days last year, yes it really was 145 degree inside our costumes! Imagine Muddy and Muddonna, doing it every day during the summer! I’ll stick to, the ever so warm, Savage Arena. Haha!

How do we keep cool on days like that? Well, there are many things that we can do to avoid heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

– Drink TONS of Gatorade!

– Drink water

– Take lots of breaks

– Ice packs (Not always useful because they melt real quick!)

– Some mascots even have little fans in their heads….we do not.

So the next time you ask a mascot if it is hot in there and they say no, that is their way of being sarcastic. Yes, it is quite hot in there.

SEE YOU AT THE NEXT GAME!

GOOOOOO ROCKETS!

Mascot Night!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if mascots played basketball? Well you are going to get your chance to see! On January 10, 2012 (weird…..2012) our Athletic Department is putting on a Mascot Night with a few of Rocksy and I’s good friends! The game begins at 7pm and all of the mascots will be in the crowd entertaining YOU! At half time we are going to find out how well Rocksy and I can play basketball. We have been practicing! …..Rocksy still needs some work….. Here is a list of our friends that are going to be attending!

-BDs Mongolian: Mongo Man

-Ben Franklin One Hour Heating and Cooling: Ben Franklin and One Hour
-Sonic
-Gino’s Original Pizza
-Promedica: TC Hops
-Toledo Blade: Clementine Newshound
-Rocksy

And obviously myself! Clementine and I have had many encounters and he is the reigning champion of the Toledo Walleye dodgeball tournament! It’s time for revenge!

This should be a GREAT game and we all hope to see you there! And this will be Rocksy’s first Men’s Basketball game!

SEE YOU AT THE GAME!

GOOOOO ROCKETS!

Our week adventures!

Rocksy and I had quite a busy passed week for appearances. Last Wednesday we attended a Tigers game, and Friday we went to a Central Catholic Football game for their mascot night! (We had more stuff in between but those were the two biggest things!) It was a BLAST and Rocksy said that she wanted to share the videos and photos!

Tigers Game:

We went to the Tigers game with a bunch of people from UT to accept a check for the Scholarly Savings account! We walked around the park for a while and got to go on the field and meet some players! Okay, well one!

Before we helped accept a check from the Tigers.

The link below is the video of the check presentation before the game. UT received over $100,000 from the Strikeout for Scholarships program! We received the check from starting pitcher, Doug Fister! (Rocksy thought he was cute…..)

A thought from me to you…

Hello Fellow Rockets!

Through out the week I have been hearing the same question over and over….. “Will you tackle Brutus on Saturday?”

The answer to that would be no! When it comes to rivalries mascots are out of the picture. We all respect each other and we all get along…. Yes! Even Freddie and Frieda.

I hope to see a lot of Rocket Fans tomorrow at OSU! I hope that all of those fans will be there supporting the Rockets! I know that it is Ohio State and many of you may be an OSU fan. But all I ask is for one day, please wear Toledo gear! This is the year we can actually beat OSU and if the team looks into the stands and sees nothing but a sea of scarlet and grey…that’s going to hurt! So wear BLUE AND GOLD!!

You go to Toledo, not Ohio State.

On that note, safe travels to C-Bus! I am leaving at 7:00am and I will be at the shoe by 9:00am ish. Depending on how fast Larry Burns drives ;-).

See you at the Volleyball game at 7pm and See YOU At The Shoe!

GOOOOOOO ROCKETS!!!!
