Rockets Recycle: Green Tailgating — Volunteer Opportunity!!!

  • What: Promote recycling at Rocket football games
  • When: Every Home Football Game
  • Where: Glass Bowl Stadium & Tailgating Lots
  • Rocket Recycling logo_2ccWho: Any student, faculty, or staff member that wants to volunteer. Sign up by yourself, with a friend, or with a student organization! We love when a student organization wants to sponsor one of the games as a service event and bring all their members!
  • Why: Significant amounts of recyclables are generated inside and outside of the stadium. Rocket Recycling wants to provide opportunities to capture and recycle these waste streams!
  • What Do You Get?: Pizza and a free SEED t-shirt!

Volunteer Shifts:

  1. Pre-Game (PG) Shift: 2 hr. before kickoff (2 hr. shift) Hand out trash and recycling bags to tailgaters
  2. Game Time (GT) Shift: kick off to 3rd quarter (2 hr. shift) Hand out trash and recycling bags to tailgaters Pick up full bags and sort bags
  3. Clean up (CU) Shift: 3rd quarter to clean up (1.5 hr. shift) Pick up full bags from tailgate area and stadium and sort bags Pick up empty aluminum cans in the Rocket Hall lot

Fall 2014 Shifts:

  • UT vs New Hampshire – Aug 30th **We will need a student organization to sponsor this game!
    • Pre-Game (PG) Shift: 5PM-7PM
    • Game Time (GT) Shift: 7PM-9PM Clean up (CU) Shift: 9PM-10:30PM
  • UT vs New Hampshire – Sept 6th
    • Pre-Game (PG) Shift: 10AM-12PM
    • Game Time (GT) Shift: 12PM-2PM
    • Clean up (CU) Shift: 2PM-3:30PM
  • UT vs Ball State – Sept 20th
    • Pre-Game (PG) Shift: TBD
    • Game Time (GT) Shift: TBD
    • Clean up (CU) Shift: TBD
  • UT vs Central Michigan – Sept 27th
    • Pre-Game (PG) Shift: TBD

is Brooke Mason, Sustainability Specialist for The University of Toledo, manages the Rocket Recycling program for over 100 buildings on three campuses with a staff of one non-student and six student employees. She is also responsible for the greenhouse gas inventory and the Climate Action Plan, which guide the University toward climate neutrality. Brooke is highly involved in sustainability education and outreach towards students including advising the Environmental Sustainability Living Learning Community, Society for Environmental Education, and UT’s Student Green Fund. She runs other student sustainability programs including Rockets Recycle: Green Tailgating, Friday Night Lights, RecycleMania, Campus Conservation Nationals, BlackoUT, and the Give & Go: Move Out program. Brooke has earned her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Policy & Sustainability Management from Bowling Green State University and is currently working on her Masters in Engineering at UT. She also sits on the Stewardship Committee for the Black Swamp Conservancy.
